The Grand Hotel Zermatterhof has been named Hotel of the Year by Karl Wild, the author of the renowned Swiss hotel ranking. A great honour for the managers of the five-star hotel, who want to share their joy with the guests this summer.

The jury particularly emphasised the innovative strength with which hotel director Rafael Biner and his team have constantly developed the business over the past years. Those who checked into the time-honoured hotel 20 years ago found themselves in a stiff-looking palace, recalls hotel expert Karl Wild. That is very different today.

In the various restaurants, such as the hotel’s own gourmet restaurant Prato Borni, in the saychees! Käsestube or the Stars Bar, guests feel completely at home. The hotel’s facilities, Wild continues, have been continually expanded. And the services and service quality have also developed very well. The Zermatterhof has succeeded in expanding the circle of regular guests and also appealing to a new audience. Karl Wild: “The Zermatterhof is a pearl that today plays in the Champions League of the Alpine hotel industry”. The hotel ranking is already being published for the 25th time. Wild and his team – consisting of 16 specialists from the hotel industry and tourism – test all hotels themselves. They evaluate according to criteria such as hospitality, price-performance ratio or also the quality controls of leading hotel associations. The ranking “The Best 100 Hotels in Switzerland” is published in the SonntagsZeitung and also in book form (Weber Verlag).

The award is a great honour for hotel director Rafael Biner and the entire staff. At the same time, it confirms the strategic path of the Matterhorn Group AG, which operates the Zermatterhof and more than a dozen other restaurants and hostels in Zermatt. Over the past 15 years, it has invested 90 million Swiss francs in its operations. This was done on behalf of the Zermatt Burgergemeinde, the majority shareholder of the Matterhorn Group AG. Those responsible at the Zermatterhof want to share the great joy of the award with their guests. Several top offers await them in the summer. And gourmet fans can also rejoice: In the Hotel of the Year, the chef and sommelier of the year, Heinz Rufibach and Peter Zimmermann, provide the culinary highlights.
